Hiding in the shadows

As I make my way around the minefield of internet dangers, one thing becomes clear- "the dangers of the internet are living in the shadows, growing in number and strength they lurk somewhat undetected or ignored, until they affect you or someone you love".

Just viewing this you-tube video on Bullycide Victims will make you count your blessings this Thanksgiving Day.

Biggs, of Pembroke Pines, in Florida, took a lethal mixture of three drugs on
Wednesday, then blogged about it while a webcam broadcast his actions, including
his death. "There's an exhibitionistic quality to this, a strange dance between
the suicide and the audience. He's doing it for the group in a very complicated
process we don't really understand. Would he have carried it out without the
audience? Probably not." The webcam might have contributed to the psychological
distance that allowed other bloggers to urge, even taunt, the young man to go
ahead with the suicide, Shaw said. (full story)

So, not only do we have to worry about predators, The True Dangers of Internet Porn, gambling, Cyber-bullies, and porn traps-- parents have to worry about the subject matter our kids are browsing for-- such as: suicide, bomb-making, weapons, and so on... and who they are sharing their feelings with on-line!!!!

Our tag line for My Internet Doorman, "your kids need you now more than ever", becomes more appropriate every day!

A Happy Thanksgiving Day to All!

Amazing Grace

When I started out in this mission of rebuilding the riverbanks, my focus was on the youth, on those who are most influenced by society's reckless fight to be "Free". I have been witness to what I would consider an "Amazing Grace"; adults discovering the True Dangers of Internet Porn and choosing to self-censor! They are using our Fully Managed Internet Filter, service to block porn and some are getting the help they need to stop gambling too! Our services are getting rave reviews from the clients who have subscribed-- for many it has been a "God-send", having experienced the failure and frustration of traditional filters. I thank all those who have our work in their prayers and support me in so many ways.

Real Deal... Listen to your wife!

Last Thursday night I had the pleasure to be the main speaker at a PTA meeting in Linden, NJ. I opened with a review of missing and exploited children in NJ and went on to introduce a question from Mr. Real Deal... he asked
"Porn has always been around and boys will be boys. My wife is always
nagging that our son is on the computer too much and at odd hours. What is
the real deal with internet porn? "
The ladies loved our answer
"...listen to your wife! Today’s internet porn is not like the girlie magazines
you used to hide under your bed! We are talking hardcore, streaming video
and pictures, of just about everything and anything you would not ever want to
imagine! These images are HARMFUL to your child/teen/and you!"

By the end of the presentation I had no voice, but it was worth it; the responses and feedback from all those in attendance was extremely positive, they seemed sincerely grateful for the eye-opener they had just encountered...but, will it be enough? Will they follow through with their commitment to educate themselves and learn more about the True Dangers? Will they review the video clips and share them with their kids? Will they role play the tips on Talking to your kids? For their children's sake, I hope so, but only time will tell.

Eroded Riverbanks Affecting More Than Just Our Kids

This past week has been interesting and insightful; the issue of inappropriate material on the web, porn to be precise, has been described by several adult clients as addictive... sure, one thing is to read about it, or when researchers state it in a congressional hearing, but to hear it from the mouths of those affected by it- makes you think! One man I spoke with described how he lost a great job because of his addiction, and, with a quivering voice, he assured me that without help he knew he would lose his current one as well. It felt great to be able to tell him he was not alone, that I was here to help him. It seems that the effects of eroded riverbanks is not only affecting the most vulnerable of our society-- our kids, but also adults...and I am not talking about "some pervert in a trench coat"; Actor David Duchovny recently entered rehab because of a self proclaimed porn addiction, and let's not forget Peter Cook-- Christie Brinkley’s husband and his $3,000/month porn addiction! A dear friend once said to me that “he was never quick to judge, because he would remind himself that “there go I, if not for the grace of God.” Thanks JD.

Rebuilding The River Banks - One Parent's Journey

The journey began in 2006 after reading an article which showed a parallel between a river and the family, and the results of erosion! The article made clear that a river although beautiful and teaming with life, becomes a swamp if its riverbanks are allowed to erode! It went on to depict the swamp of death that results from this uncontrolled, once source of life. The article was a call to take our heads out of the sand and realize that this is the very thing happening in our society and in our homes today; the river banks are eroding.

My son and I have a great relationship, we talk about everything; when he was about 16 we were talking about porn, the internet, sex, etc., he made a comment which stuck in my mind, he said, "Dad, with things the way they are going, what will the world be like when my little brother is a teenager?” This comment was called up when reading the article I just described... I decided then, that I could not sit around and do nothing, that I would somehow find a way to make a difference.

The internet, and porn in particular, became the focus of my attention. As a teacher, youth-minister, parent, and adult catechist I knew that this issue was a growing crisis and that most parents, despite their efforts to control the internet, were losing the battle. With the help of my brother, and after several months of research... http://www.myinternetdoorman.org/ was born! This site was designed to keep parents informed about technology, porn, and how to talk to their kids about these issues. I keep it up to date with a monthly newsletter, new video clips to view and share with your kids if appropriate, information on the dangers of internet porn, a village forum for parents to post questions and solutions and support each other, and a great Q&A section. Many families have expressed their thanks for our resources and I know we are making a difference.

My journey continues down many roads; I am scheduled to do presentations in several schools for both Parents and Teens in September-- 1 for the parents, teachers, and administrators on the dangers of internet porn and a section I call "PORN IN THE YEAR 2008" a censored representation of the reality which our kids are exposed to ... it's not Playboy!!! The other, with the youth, regarding their use of the internet, social networking, predators, the effects of porn on future relationships, and the sort!

As parents and adults, we need to take a stand and begin to set an example for what is and is not acceptable.
